About Rain
Rain Ogilvie is a designer, creator, and maker of high-quality textile products inspired by Thai craftspeople using time-honoured sustainable techniques. Rain's passion for handmade fabrics began as a child on a trip to Northern Thailand where she first wove silk on a bamboo loom. As an undergraduate at the prestigious Thammasat University in Bangkok, Rain traveled to rural Thailand numerous times on fieldwork, where she gained a lifelong admiration and passion for the skills of traditional fabric-making from locally sourced materials.
After leaving university Rain pursued a career in interior design, an industry she worked in for nearly a decade. Here she worked for high-end companies such as the well-respected Kingsman C.M.T.I. Plc, winning, managing and delivering contracts for blue-chip multinationals like GANT, Rolex, The Hour Glass, Siam Kempinski and Indorama. In spite of her success (in a highly patriarchal society), Rain’s ultimate passion was for the heritage of Thai fabrics, and she set out to create a company that would allow her to work with and promotes these wonderful techniques, materials, and products.
In 2008 Rain left a successful career and traveled to the UK to study her MBA in Business Administration at the University of Wales in London. She graduated in 2011, and then went on to gain a certificate in interior design from the University of Hertfordshire. During her studies, Rain met and later married Matt, an academic working at Canterbury Christ Church University. It wasn’t long until baby Charles, a charming little cutie, came along.
In 2017 Rain realised her dream and set up Rain Ogilvie, a company dedicated to high-quality ethical products using sustainable fabrics. Rain now travels regularly to rural Thailand where she works with traditional craftspeople to design, commission and select handmade cotton and silks. Her passion for handmade fabrics continues at her Canterbury studio, a space dedicated to creating an array of unique garments and interior design products, also by hand.
